Outdoor Living Trends 2021 - Creating A Backyard Oasis
Looking for some inspiration to fuel your outdoor oasis dreams? It’s that time of year again - the weather is warming up, the plants are growing, and soon we’ll want to be outside enjoying it all. Time to plan our outdoor living space so we can enjoy the warm weather with friends and family.
What defines outdoor living anyway? Whether its a few moments of solitude on the balcony, a grilled family dinner eaten in the garden, or throwing a backyard bash, giving our outdoor space attention like our indoor rooms really lets us make the most of home living.
I’m finishing up my own backyard garden re-design and I’ve been looking at lots (lottss!) of images and posts so I thought it would be fun to share some trending outdoor living inspo and go through the core components for a successful outdoor space.
Bringing the indoors out
Garden rooms both indoors and out are the cornerstone of Greenhouse Studio, so I’m happy to report it remains a strong design trend. (Garden room searches are up 104% this year according to Pinterest.)
Creating your own outdoor room gives you extra square footage of living space during the warm months. Making it a cozy space with many of the details like you’d have indoors is one of the most popular #backyardgoals.
How to go about this?
Start with comfy outdoor seating. A sofa or loveseat if space allows. Even if you only have room for a bistro set or arm-chair, having a padded cushion under your derriere adds to the outdoor experience by encouraging lingering.
Outdoor fabrics have come a long way since first introduced, and fabrics like Sunbrella do a good job of resisting staining, fading, and moisture so they stay looking good for a long time.
Next add a cocktail table or small side table(s). They don’t have to take up much space to hold your drink.
Create ambiance with outdoor lighting. It’s easy to hang a string of festival lights along a wall or fence line or place hurricane lanterns with candles on a table - instant atmosphere.
Outdoor rugs definitely help to create an outdoor living room atmosphere by defining a space and adding texture and softness underfoot.
Keep everyone cozy and warm on chilly nights with fire. Fire is a natural design element for outdoor entertaining and family enjoyment. People love to gather around it and it keeps guests lingering longer when the evenings get chilly.
Finish your look with outdoor accessories and have fun with it. Pillows, poufs, planted centerpieces, throw blankets.

Outdoor style trend alert - boho inspired patio decor
As far as style trends go, boho has been with us for a while now in fashion and interiors, so it’s not surprising that it’s making big style inroads outdoors too. It’s casual, global, natural, and cozy, and it resonates with many people right now.
It’s an eclectic look, but overall it’s more neutral than not these days. Whether it’s cream and charcoal, blue and white, or terracotta earth tones, its about outdoor comfort featuring natural materials often from different corners of the earth.
Spanish, Italian, or Moroccan style is popular - pillows and poufs tossed on a patio daybed with a pom pom throw and oversized lanterns.
Neutral and natural - boho style fringed hammocks and macrame accessories are everywhere.
Woven outdoor pendants for overhead lighting and ambiance. I remember seeing ones just like those below for indoor-outdoor use in the souks of Marrakesh.
Casual and natural looking shade structures made from rough-hewn timber with muslin fabric or sheeting draped for shade instead of chunky, plastic-y gazebos. I’m especially obsessed with this look! Airy shade with some privacy and I can pretend I’m on some far-flung exotic vacation while sitting in my garden.
Well hopefully you got some inspiration for creating your own outdoor living oasis. Either that or you just really want to go on a sunny vacay now. I didn’t even talk about plants for once either.
What trends are you liking and wanting to try the most? Any that just don’t work for you? I’d love to hear what you think.
