When I first spotted this chair on Pinterest, I swooned! It was love at first Modernist sight! This is a reintroduction of the famed "Cherner Chair" designed by Norman Cherner for Plycraft in1958.
It is still considered a remarkable design for utilizing the technology of molding plywood and is featured in the Frank Gehry designed Vitra Design Museum in Germany.
Like the 1958 original, Hive Modern’s Cherner armchair utilizes a molded plywood beech core seat with layers of laminated plywood and face veneers in beech or walnut. Each chair is manufactured from the original drawings, molds, and specifications by Cherner Chair which is still run by Norman Cherner’s sons.
I would love to see these chairs in my own dining room as a change of pace to the more traditional, upholstered klismos-style chairs I currently have. Informal or formal, but always very modern, these chairs can hold their own in a variety of dining atmospheres.
They would look great in any mid-century dining area but could also be incorporated as a contrast to other style tables and rooms.
They would also look great flanking a credenza in an entryway or elsewhere (you could keep a couple extra flanking either side of a buffet to be used for extra seating around the table).
The Hive Modern Cherner Chair comes in 11 total finishes that can be mixed and matched. (Do you prefer Ebony and Beech or Ebony and Walnut? :)
Options for the other less pricey versions range from Inmod’s three finish options to one standard finish with the Walmart version.
