No-Sew Baby Sock Christmas Ornament [5 Minute Holiday DIY]
Is it your baby’s first Christmas? Don’t donate those baby socks just yet - hang on to a couple of them! You know, the ones they wore when they came home from the hospital that fit perfectly, but then they outgrew in a heartbeat?
Take 5 minutes to DIY them into what will become your most cherished holiday ornaments in years to come.
When my twins came home from the hospital, they fortunately weren’t preemies like so many multiples, but they were still quite small. I remember like yesterday how their smooth little legs looked wearing those tiny white socks that fit perfectly for a brief moment in time.
When they outgrew them, I couldn’t bring myself to give them all away. I wanted physical evidence that I could hold in my hand to remember years later just how tiny they had once been.
It popped into my head how easy it would be to DIY a simple ornament from those baby socks that I could look at on our tree year after year. They truly are my favorite ornaments now, (along with their little bro’s socks) and I always hang them towards the top of the tree near the star so they can’t be missed.
Want to do the same for your baby? Here’s how:
Project Time: 5 minutes
Materials:
Baby sock (or two or a 1/2 dozen!)
Thin ribbon, embroidery thread, garden/kitchen twine for a more rustic look
Fabric glue, glue-gun, or needle and thread
Directions:
Take the ribbon and make a loop large enough to hang on the tree and tie into a bow
Use either a glue-gun or fabric glue place a dot of glue to the sock and position the ribbon
Alternately - Double-thread a needle and tie a knot in the end with enough thread left to re-tie
Position knot of the bow where you want it on the upper back of the sock and push threaded needle through from the inside of the sock out the back of the sock and through the center of the bow. Thread back through the bow and through the sock. Repeat if you want for extra durability. Tie a knot on the inside the sock and clip thread ends.
Voila! All done and ready to hang on the tree for many years to come.
I think you will come to appreciate this small, holiday momento-ornament each year, especially when you kids are almost grown like my twins, and their younger bro is rapidly catching up.
They are now 20 years old, 6’1” tall, and have legit size 12 feet. The youngest is also clocking in at 5’10” and a size 12!
Maybe their big toe would fit into one of those tiny white socks!
Truly, the days can be long, but the years are short. In almost a flash they have gone from babies to men.
They are now off to college, and I couldn’t be more proud of the fine young men they’ve become.
Seeing their little baby socks on the Christmas tree each year for me is lovely way to remember how far they’ve come and how much they’ve grown. Do the same with your little one’s socks - they’ll become a precious memory every year when you trim the tree.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours!
